The Yankees are ready to call out an outfielder Estevan Florialas first reported by Bob Klapisch of the Newark Star-Ledger (Twitter link). New York will also promote infielder Oswaldo Cabrera before his major league debut, Daniel Alvarez Montes of El Extra Base reports. Both players are already on the 40-man roster. The Yankees have yet to formally announce the pair’s promotions or the associated moves that come with them, though Cabrera has confirmed his initial call to the show on his Instagram.
This is the second call to the Majors this year for 24-year old Florial and the third season in which he has received some big league promotions. While Florial already had several MLB-chances, he played in only 16 Major League-games and took 40 at bats as a member of the big league, hitting only .206/.325/.353 in that time.
That lack of production was, of course, accompanied by scarce playing time. Florial never got a real appearance and regular playing time at the big league level, despite being in the top 50 of the game between 2018 and 19. His stock has since dimmed – in no small part due to a lukewarm .218/.315/.404 slash in Triple-A last season. However, Florial enjoys a much better run in his second Triple-A stint this year, hitting .286/.368/.490 with 14 homeruns, 26 doubles, a pair of triples and a hefty 32 stolen bases.
Florial’s massive strikeout rate of 30.8% in Triple-A isn’t an improvement over last year’s 30.9%, so the lack of bat-to-ball skills is a definite concern (and another reason why he may not be as highly touted as he was a few years ago). Nevertheless, with the Yankees stumbling through a dismal 3-12 in recent weeks, with just nine runs in total over their last seven games, they will be looking to increase the lineup and get some new faces into the mix. hoping to turn things around.
In addition to Florial, the Yankees will give 23-year-old Cabrera his first call to the Majors. Cabrera, a switch-hitter who has seen time this year at second base, short stop, third base and in the outfield corners (albeit just one game left and one right), will give skipper Aaron Boone plenty of versatility. He hits .262/.340/.492 through 208 Triple-A at bats with eight home runs, a dozen doubles, three triples and ten steals to go along with a 9.4% walk rate and strikeout percentage of 26.6%.
While neither Florial nor Cabrera are necessarily at the top of the sport, they are both highly regarded in the Yankees’ system. Baseball America ranks Florial at number 10 on the team and Cabrera at number 12, while MLB.com ranks them back-to-back at number 14 (Cabrera) and 15 (Florial).
