Insomniacs miracle‘s Spider Man recently made the leap from PlayStation exclusivity to Windows PC, as did Sony’s god of war did earlier this year. Of course, the sprawling open-world superhero game has caught some attention from the modding community, who now have the freedom to transform Spider-Man into Kingpin and other characters.
However, some modders took this newfound freedom for granted and turned to the various Pride flags scattered everywhere. Marvel’s Spider-Man‘s New York and replace them with American flags. Fortunately, popular mod sites Nexus Mods and ModDB have taken a stand against this behavior.
On Thursday, Nexus Mods released a blog on its site covering a “silly drama”. The post tells of how a user uploaded an anti-LGBTQ mod using a sock puppet account that removed all in-game Pride flags. Nexus Mods called out the user for intentionally trolling which resulted in the site runners banning both the sock puppet account and the user’s main account.
“With regard to the replacement of Pride flags in this game, or any game for that matter, our policy is as follows: we are for inclusivity, we are for diversity,” wrote user Dark0ne, site owner and author of the Nexus Mods blog post. “If we believe that someone is uploading a mod to our site with the intent to intentionally oppose inclusivity and/or diversity, we will take action. The same goes for people who try to troll other users with mods, intentionally to cause a rise.”
The post went on to promise that the team will do a better job of tweaking the site itself in the future. It also clarified that when removing mods like this, all Nexus Mods can do is remove it from its site, not completely remove it from the web. You can find hateful mods like this one on some mod sites, but Nexus Mods won’t be one of them. “We don’t want and won’t discuss this with you,” Dark0ne wrote. “[…] If this policy upsets you, if we as a company have violated a code of ethics that you cannot accept, please delete your account.”
ModDB, another popular mod site, followed in the footsteps of Nexus Mods a few hours later, when a fan tweeted evidence of a mod specifically targeting “dumb Pride flags” and tagged with both “Trump” and ” Trump 2024″. The ModDB Twitter account tweeted that the site has banned the users who created the mod and removed the content, saying, “ModDB is an inclusive environment for everyone and we do not allow targeting of marginalized groups.” ModDB assured fans that while the moderation tools are automated, the site will continue to remove this type of content if a warning is issued for it.
While site-specific bans like these hateful mods will never end completely, the actions of Nexus Mods and ModDB send an important message of inclusivity to fans both within and beyond the PC gaming ecosystem.
